Why Plasterboard Must Be Recycled
Since 2009, regulations around plasterboard disposal have changed. Previously, it was legal to send plasterboard to landfill if it made up less than 10% of total construction waste. However, due to its gypsum content, plasterboard must now be separated and recycled by law.
When gypsum is mixed with biodegradable waste, it can produce hydrogen sulphide—a toxic, foul-smelling gas that poses serious health and environmental risks.
Recycling plasterboard helps reduce landfill use, conserves natural resources, and cuts greenhouse gas emissions linked to manufacturing new materials.
Important: Never mix plasterboard with general waste. It must be collected and processed using dedicated plasterboard recycling equipment.
